Johanna has been a professional photographer since 1997. She graduated with honors from the University of Utah with a B.A. in News-Editorial Journalism/Photojournalism in 1998.
She worked as a photographer for The Ogden Standard Examiner (Utah) for a year until she was hired as a staff photographer for the Deseret News in Salt Lake City, Utah.
After her twin daughters were born, she left the newspaper to pursue motherhood and freelance photography.
Her background in photojournalism has made her knowledgeable in photographing a vast variety of fields, from intimate studio portraits to on-location events.
She's comfortable photographing areas such as architecture, sports, news, weddings, portraits, etc. The benefit of having worked for years in the news business is that she can handle a ferocious pace as well as being patient and few things rattle her. Her background has enabled her to work with an enormous variety of people and she prides herself with making her clients comfortable and relaxed.
Her style is photojournalistic and she loves seeking out the moments that happen when people forget that they are being photographed.
Her work has won numerous awards from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and UPPA (Utah Press Photographers' Association), and NPPA (National Press Photographers' Association). Her photographs are featured in the books "Utah 24/7" (Smolan, Cohen), Lee Benson's Inside Guide to the Games 2002 Salt Lake City, as well as "2002 Salt Lake City" (Deseret News).
